A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
