Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
