England and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
