Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
